Why Curiosity Is Good for Your Mental Health
Research consistently shows that curious people report higher wellbeing, stronger relationships, and greater resilience. Here's what the science says — and how a single question can change your day.
There's a moment most of us recognise — a question arrives out of nowhere and suddenly the world feels a little larger. Why is the sky that particular shade of blue after rain? What would it feel like to speak a language with no word for tomorrow? Curiosity, it turns out, is not just a pleasant distraction. It's one of the most powerful tools we have for maintaining mental health.
What the research shows
A landmark study by Todd Kashdan and colleagues found that people who scored high on curiosity measures reported significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression. More striking still, curious people were better able to tolerate the uncertainty that often underlies anxious thinking — they could sit with an unanswered question and feel energised rather than threatened by it.
Curiosity activates the brain's reward pathways in much the same way as physical exercise. When we encounter something novel, dopamine is released — creating a sense of anticipation and pleasure that motivates us to explore further. Over time, this becomes a self-reinforcing loop: curiosity leads to discovery, discovery leads to satisfaction, and satisfaction deepens our appetite for the next question.
Curiosity as connection
Beyond individual wellbeing, curiosity transforms our relationships. When we approach others with genuine interest — asking not just 'how are you?' but leaning into the answer — people feel seen. That feeling of being seen is foundational to trust, and trust is foundational to everything else.
A simple practice to start today
You don't need a structured programme to cultivate curiosity. Start with one question a day — not a question you already know the answer to, but a genuine one. Write it down. Sit with it. See where it takes you. The Clue Card was designed with exactly this practice in mind: one card, one prompt, one moment of deliberate wonder.
Give someone the gift of curiosity
For every Clue Card purchased, we donate one to a person in need through a charity of your choice.
